The 1and1 Control Panel Review was conducted on 1and1’s Linux home shared web hosting package.

1and1 Internet Inc's web hosting control panel is a proprietary in-house application with a range of features that truly allows the web administrator complete control over its services. I don't know the details of how 1and1 develops it's control panel, and it could very well be an outsourced service or a customization of a control panel from a third-party vendor.

There are trade-offs between having a custom in-house control panel vs. having a proprietary control panel from a third-party software vendor, such as Parallels (Formerly SwSoft). Some of the trade-offs are as follows:

• Since an in-house control panel is the sole-property of the web hosting company, it can be assumed they are the experts when it comes to its control panel. On the other hand, a third-party control panel is a software developed by another company, and therefore, the web hosting company may not be as knowledgeable about its control panel as its developers.
• A third-party control panel, such as cPanel, enjoys a larger user base since different web hosting companies can offer essentially the same control panel. This larger community is useful in the case that a user needs more information or additional support outside the assistance provided by the web hosting company, which sometimes can be abysmal.
